Assistance League® of Pomona Valley Philanthropic Advisory Council Meets

The Philanthropic Projects Advisory meeting was held September 22nd at the Chapter House. Annual reports for the 2014-2015 fiscal year were presented by our program chairmen and the Dental Center staff. The Dental Center Co-Chairmen reported that we provided over 1,300 treatments to 425 patients during the past year. The Operation School Bell® Chairman reported that we provided clothing, hygiene kits and new and gently used books to over 1,200 children from the Pomona Unified School District and surrounding districts. 2014-2015 was a very successful year for both of these key programs.

The meeting continued with a discussion of our efforts to increase the visibility and significantly expand both of these programs during the 2015-2016 period.  Jane Hubbard and Carole Lyles, Co-Chairmen of the Dental Center program described the efforts they are making to raise our visibility within PUSD and other school systems in our area to significantly increase the number of patients served. This includes community outreach efforts to hand out new informational flyers and posters to school nurses and health assistants from Pomona, Bonita and Claremont Unified School Districts and dental clinics at Western University. Jane and Carole are working with Jody Ruby from PUSD Health Services, to identify where and how we can best contribute to meet the student’s needs. Members of our Dental Center staff, Dr. Elva Maldonado and Mary Hernandez, reported on the current operations and some of the future equipment and facility needs. The Dental Center has received a $6,000 Community Development Block Grant from the City of Pomona to help cover the costs of increasing the number of patients served.

Stephanie Roberts, Chairman of the Operation School Bell program and Sally Boyd, Chairman of the Community Closet program discussed the work being done to significantly expand the program to provide jeans and pants to both girls and boys using our first Community Development Block Grant from the City of Pomona for this program. This has been a goal for some time and we are happy to now be able to proceed. Julia Cortez from PUSD Family Services reported on the efforts to organize and schedule school children for our Operation School Bell delivery days.

In addition to the afore mentioned individuals, we would also like to extend our thanks to Dr. Mark Maine PhD, Dr. Anderson Alas DDS and Dr. Jennifer Tsai DDS for their support and contributions to our programs.
